THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL IN THE ARTS

Β

These online pages are a private collection of material for study of the iconography of saint and archangel Michael – a growing online catalogue as well as a virtual exhibition.

There is plenty of literature about angels, mostly of esoteric or purely popular character. This collection focuses on the heavenly ambassador, weigher of souls and slayer of dragon, and follows the stylistic evolution of his representation.

An attempt to compile a complete list of depictions of St. Michael is futile in view of the sheer number. Well-known artists and idiosyncratic representations from museums and churches are given preference here.
Β
The main focus is on paintings, but sculptures as well as graphic works, drawings, prints, coins, jewelry and sacred objects are also included.

This project attempts to organise and label the surplus of visual material on the net. When possible, I create links to the museum directories. Please let me know of any copyright infringement. Furthermore, I am grateful for suggestions, especially corrections, as these pages are not a database with automatic links. | Michael H. G. Zachow
